The Louisiana, Missouri City Council voted Tuesday night to impeach Ward One Councilwoman Heather Wernowsky by a five-to-one margin. The action followed articles of impeachment filed last month after Wernowsky publicly questioned the chief of police regarding an October incident in which law enforcement allowed someone to enter a home they did not own. City officials cited prior media coverage and community discussion on social media, stating that her questioning interfered with police department operations and contributed to distrust in the community. The city attorney said the council used an indirect impeachment process outlined in city code, arguing Wernowsky’s actions negatively impacted public perception of city leadership. Wernowsky’s attorney challenged the city’s reasoning during the proceedings, while Wernowsky said she expected the outcome, claiming the mayor has the council stacked in his favor.
Residents in Pleasant Hill continue to oppose a proposed rezoning of flood plain property south of town following a packed public meeting where every speaker spoke against the change. Community members shared facts, personal stories, and memories of how the town came together after a 1976 fire destroyed the local grocery store. Despite the unified opposition, the zoning committee voted to recommend the rezoning. The final decision now rests with the Pike County Board, which is scheduled to vote Monday night at the Pike County Courthouse.
A small earthquake gave parts of west-central Illinois an unexpected wake-up early Tuesday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 3.8 quake struck around 1:27 a.m. near the Montgomery–Christian County line, southeast of Jacksonville. Residents across the region reported light shaking lasting several seconds, with beds and household items moving slightly. No damage was reported, and the quake was felt as far away as Peoria and the St. Louis area.
In Pike County, the Roodhouse Police Department is raising funds to continue its K-9 program as its current police dog, Turbo, prepares for retirement. Patrolman Leyton Moffitt says police dogs play a key role in drug detection, locating missing persons, and strengthening community outreach, but the costs of training, care, equipment, and vehicle modifications can be challenging for a small department. About twenty-five hundred dollars has already been raised toward the estimated eight-to-ten-thousand-dollar cost of a replacement K-9, with additional funding sources being pursued.
In Adams County, a former Quincy University assistant men’s wrestling coach is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including hate crime counts. The university says the individual is no longer employed and has no current role on campus, adding that it is cooperating fully with authorities and providing support services to students as needed. The case remains in the court system, with additional hearings scheduled later this month.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Clarksville, Missouri will host Clarksville Eagle Days on Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will be centered at The Apple Shed on Highway 79, Riverfront Park, and the downtown area, featuring live eagle programs, food vendors, exhibits, and bird-watching opportunities along the Mississippi River.
