Scott County Sheriff Tom Eddinger has announced plans to retire at the end of his current term in December 2026, closing out a 32-year career in law enforcement, including eight years as sheriff.

Eddinger said the decision was not easy, calling it “an honor and a privilege to serve our community alongside the outstanding men and women of this department.” In a statement on social media, he expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments and the trust they’ve built with residents over the years.

Community members quickly responded with messages of gratitude and well-wishes, thanking Eddinger for his dedication and leadership.

He said he looks forward to what comes next, adding that he will always carry with him the pride of having served Scott County.


The Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to $600 million for Tuesday night’s drawing — with a cash option of $277 million.

It’s the 30th drawing since the last jackpot was won in June and only the 11th time the prize has reached $600 million.

The drawing happens at 11 p.m. Tuesday and can be watched on the Mega Millions website.

The odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 290 million.

Two people were injured Friday after a house explosion on East Morton Avenue in Jacksonville.

Emergency crews were called around 4:50 p.m., rescuing both victims from the home. They were first taken to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Springfield Trauma Center.

Fire officials are working with Ameren Gas, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and other agencies to determine the cause.

Residents are asked to avoid the area while the investigation continues.


Organizers and visitors heading to Louisiana Colorfest and Pike County Fall Pickin’ Days this weekend should keep an eye on the weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire region under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms on Saturday, October 18th. Forecasters say all types of severe weather — including hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes — are possible. While the exact timing and severity aren’t yet certain, it’s something to watch closely over the next few days, as storms could affect outdoor events and travel plans on Saturday. Joyce Stone, 73, of Pittsfield, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2025, at her home. Born February 7, 1952, in Pittsfield to Paul and Kathlyn Raftery, she married Albert “Dale” Stone in 1977, and they shared 47 years together before his passing in 2024. A 1970 graduate of Barry High School, Joyce earned her cosmetology license and worked in several local beauty shops before later serving as a school cook for Pikeland Unit #10. She was also the local Avon lady. Survivors include her daughter Paula Stone, grandchildren, brother Gene Raftery, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 16 at 1 p.m. at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, with visitation two hours prior and burial at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family c/o Niebur Funeral Home.
