Early Thursday morning in New Canton, Illinois, law enforcement responded to a distress call reporting a shooting. Deputies were told that a woman had been shot by her husband, who then threatened to harm her parents. Officers quickly spread to multiple nearby residences, including the parents’ home, where both were later found dead. A SWAT team eventually entered the suspect’s residence and discovered him deceased inside. The suspect has been identified as 67-year-old Gerald E. Waligorski. The wife was airlifted to a hospital, though her condition has not been confirmed.

In the course of the standoff, local schools were placed in “Safe & Secure” or lockdown mode but were later cleared, with authorities declaring the area no longer under threat and withdrawing most officers. The motive behind the shootings remains under investigation

Trout season is almost here for Illinois anglers, and several stocked locations fall right within the WBBA listening area. Regionally, Siloam Springs State Park Lake in Adams County, Horton Lake at Nauvoo State Park in Hancock County, and Argyle Lake at Argyle Lake State Park in McDonough County will all be open for fishing this fall. The season officially begins at 5 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, with early catch-and-release opportunities at select sites starting October 4. Anglers will need both an Illinois fishing license and an inland trout stamp, available online or at local retailers. With a daily limit of five trout and more than 80,000 rainbow trout stocked statewide, the fall season is a great chance for Pike County–area families to get outdoors and enjoy time together on the water.

With cold, flu, and RSV season approaching, Missouri hospitals are preparing for a surge in patients by using hands-on training through MU Health’s Mobile Clinical Simulator, which brings high-tech mannequins to rural hospitals for realistic practice. Nurses across the state recently trained on managing respiratory illnesses, gaining confidence through safe, simulated scenarios. The program is especially critical as rural hospitals face staff shortages, funding challenges, and increased demand due to 21 hospital closures in Missouri over the past decade.
