The Illinois House of Representatives has approved a resolution sponsored by State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer designating Old U.S. Route 36 from Jacksonville to Alexander as the “Special Agent Pete Lackey Memorial Highway.” The honor recognizes Lackey, a Winchester native and Illinois Bureau of Investigation agent who was murdered on November 27, 1972, while en route to testify in a drug trial. Lackey was ambushed and fatally attacked by 26-year-old Barry Fonner of Jerseyville, who later admitted to the killing while under the influence of narcotics. Fonner was acquitted at trial but later confined to a psychiatric facility and died in prison in 1992. Special Agent Lackey had served with the Illinois Bureau of Investigation for two years and was survived by his wife and two children.
