The Pike County Sheriff’s Department arrested two Champaign residents following a crash and drug investigation along Interstate 72. On September 5, deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident where the occupants, later identified as Matthew G. Lawrence, 40, and Jessica K. Pope, 28, fled the scene. A search of the vehicle uncovered crack cocaine, heroin, syringes, scales, and other paraphernalia. After a citizen tip, both suspects were located and arrested on September 7. Lawrence, who was also wanted on warrants in Douglas and Peoria counties, was found with a loaded handgun and charged with firearm and drug offenses. Pope was charged with leaving the scene, unlawful possession of a weapon, and drug-related offenses. Additional contraband was seized during their arrests, and both remain in custody at the Pike County Jail. Authorities credited Crimestoppers and local residents for their assistance and reminded the public that tips may qualify for anonymous cash rewards.
With harvest season underway across the region, drivers can expect to see more slow-moving farm machinery on the roads through early November. Most equipment tops out at 20 mph, creating visibility and safety challenges for both farmers and motorists. Farmers often can’t see vehicles unless they are at least 10 car lengths behind, and left-hand turns are particularly risky when drivers attempt to pass. Some older farm vehicles lack turn signals, making attentiveness even more crucial. Area farmers urge motorists to slow down when approaching flashing orange lights or reflective triangles and to avoid passing on hills, curves, or in no-passing zones. Illinois State Police also reminded drivers that improper passing near intersections, railroad crossings, or bridges is not only illegal but potentially deadly.
