The Pittsfield Police Department reports that on September 17, officers responded to multiple calls of attempted vehicle burglaries and a suspicious masked individual on the southeast side of town. Surveillance led officers to a juvenile suspect previously linked to similar crimes. During the operation, a stolen vehicle arrived at the scene, fled from police, and crashed after striking mailboxes and a fire hydrant on Conroy Street. The occupants fled on foot, but all have since been located, including the driver who was apprehended nearby. Initially released under Safe-T Act restrictions, the juvenile driver is now in custody following a no-bond warrant issued by the State’s Attorney’s Office. Additional thefts in the area are under investigation, and residents are urged to check their vehicles and report missing property to 217-285-5011.
A burn ban is now in effect for Pike County, Illinois, as officials have prohibited all outdoor burning until further notice. The order, announced effective immediately, is aimed at protecting public safety amid dry conditions. County officials are asking all residents to comply with the ban and avoid any outdoor burning activities until the restriction is lifted which is expected soon with more rain predicted to fall this week.
The Meredosia-Chambersburg School Board is considering bond options to fund much-needed building improvements. During a conference call with John M. Vezzetti of Bernardi Securities, board members reviewed the district’s outstanding debt and possible bond measures. Options include a $2 million bond to be repaid at $250,000 annually over 10 years, or a $3.1 million bond with the same yearly repayment over 20 years. The process, which requires a board resolution, a public hearing, and voter approval in a referendum, is expected to take about 75 days. Superintendent Thad Walker said the funds would go toward roof repairs, new windows, and tuckpointing, noting his goal is to complete the projects so future leaders can focus solely on education. In other business, the board discussed an attempted break-in at the school, which led to police involvement and the installation of additional surveillance cameras.
